How to Start a Cupcake Business

cupcakesHave you ever seen Cupcake Wars on the Food Network? It is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows. These bakers/artists create the most beautiful and delicious cupcakes you have ever seen. I have a total respect for what they do because while I am really good at eating cupcakes, when it comes to baking them, my cupcakes turn out looking like something a toddler created in her Easy Bake Oven.

If you are a skilled baker with great cupcake recipes and a knack for design, think about making a little extra money with a cupcake business. Cupcakes are all the rage right now. People are using them for birthday parties, office celebrations and even weddings. No one eats cake anymore. It’s all about the cupcake.

The first thing you need to do is advertise your talent. Make cupcakes, a lot of cupcakes, and hand them out to anyone willing to try them. Sell them at bake sales or farmer’s markets. Once you get into a routine of producing cupcakes that are yummy and attractive, start offering them to local businesses. Maybe there is a sandwich shop in town without a dessert menu. Stop by with a sample and ask if they would be interested in selling your cupcakes to their customers.

Market yourself! Print up some business cards, start a Facebook page and create a website. Soon you will gain a dedicated following of customers who are desperate for your cupcakes. Pay attention to the details. People want something special when they pay top dollar for a decorative dessert. Make the boxes that hold the cupcakes pretty and reliable. Offer to deliver to homes, offices and parties. Give out coupons and discounts to your best customers.

If you’re really good, don’t be afraid to move from small side business into a full time cupcake empire. I’ll be watching for you on Cupcake Wars.
